Overwintered broccoli

Overwintered broccoli

The first large 500gr broccoli was just allowed to join the Open Garden yesterday, but then it did not go any further - it will be for dinner today. It is sown in September, overwintered in the greenhouse and then planted in a manure pile in late March. Harvesting usually begins here in early June and continues for the next 2-3 weeks with both heads and side shoots - until the plants are removed to make room for a few cucumbers. The variety is called Aquiles from Thompson & Morgan, but the old variety Waltham should also be suitable for overwintering.
